Pete Carrol, head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders, is the oldest head coach hire in NFL history. Pete Carroll will soon be 73 years young. Yes, that is right, 73 years young not 73 years old! Pete Carroll continues to work with all of those around him by setting expectations and supporting efforts with positive affirmations. In a recent article (https://apple.news/AS-dpVTrFQ3aZdYEuPvb4WQ),Michael-Shawn Dugar and Tashan Reed state “Carroll’s relationship-based approach takes many forms. He’s demanding and sets a high standard, but his primary means of motivation is built around positive affirmations, not preying on fear of failure.”
How can we generate the positive effect through the focus of setting standards, using positive affirmations and avoiding the fear of failure? Understanding what we stand for, what matters most to us, what are the values that we hold dear and want others to see in us are all critical components of understanding our greatness. Pete Carroll makes the following statement in the article “The essence of it is figuring out who you are and what you want to stand for, and how you are going to deal with people, And it has to come from your heart. It has to be right, as authentic as it can possibly be.”
To be authentic, you must know yourself deeply which leads us back to understanding the answers to the questions of what do I stand for, what matters most to me and what are my most important values? These answers literally identify your individual and amazing greatness. Use positive affirmations when discovering the answers to these questions about yourself. Focus on things people say they admire or like about you, focus on the successes you have incurred and what you felt at those times. In the mentioned article, Pete Carroll also suffered setbacks in his journey. Pete Carroll was fired a year into his first head coaching job, he was subsequently fired from his second head coaching job after only three years. Yet Pete Carroll is today a National College Football championship coach, a NFL world championship head coach and will likely be inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame. What will your legacy be? Is it too late? The answer to the first is still be obtained through your efforts from this day forward! The answer to the second question is absolutely NOT! Go be great!
